Bar Mitzvah, Bat Mitzvah, B’Mitzvah
In the Jewish tradition, when a child turns 13, they become an adult member of the Jewish people, and celebrate the moment by reading from the Torah.
A bat mitzvah (for girls), bar mitzvah (for boys) or b’mitzvah (our gender-neutral term) is a moment of celebration. Each child will begin the journey towards BM from around the age of 11, learning Hebrew but also exploring the meaning of their Jewish identity.
On the big day, they will co-lead a Saturday morning service with Rabbi Gabriel, read from the Torah scroll, and give a short talk about what their BM means to them.
You don’t need to be 13 to have a BM, though! Those who are little older are welcome; those who are much older are welcome; and those who are 83 and would like to take part in the tradition of a second BM are welcome too! Let us know your interest and Rabbi Gabriel will be in touch.
For those with additional needs, we can make whatever changes necessary to accommodate you and your family, even creating an entirely new ceremony.
