Chris Gebbie, the former High Sheriff of Sussex, entertainingly describes the origins of Shrievalty – – the oldest office under the crown – – as well as the arcane process of appointment, the relationship the lieutenancy and the relevance of High Sheriffs in today’s world. Chris includes snatches of his 2014/2015 diary of experiences wearing velvet.

The synagogue at 6 Lansdowne Road is a 15–20-minute walk from both Hove and Brighton railway stations, and easily accessible by bus. Parking is free on a first come first served basis at Brunswick School on Somerhill Road. Alternatively, parking is available with PayByPhone cashless parking.

BHPS WINS SUSSEX HERITAGE TRUST AWARD
BRIGHTON AND HOVE PROGRESSIVE SYNAGOGUE WINS SUSSEX HERITAGE TRUST AWARD
Brighton and Hove Progressive Synagogue has won a prestigious Sussex Heritage award for their state of the art synagogue located in Lansdowne Road, Hove. The synagogue recently re-opened after redevelopment, has a new layout and beautifully designed interior to follow the ethos of inclusivity and diversity. Clear winners in the Ecclesiastical Category, BHPS received a hand crafted slate plaque to place on their building. BHPS member, Myra Bianco who headed up the redevelopment scheme and expertly steered it towards completion says, 
‘We are delighted to have won this award. BHPS has been our home since 1937 and has long been in need of modernisation. Brighton Architects ZSTa, following a prior agreement of an overall design scheme by Preston Rubin Associates, have done an amazing job.’
The internal layout of the ‘new’ synagogue offers a large sanctuary, office, library, education rooms and much more over two floors. The space is also open to the wider community and its subtle presence in a conservation area provides Lansdowne Road with a new positive outlook.
A wide variety of projects have received Awards including large country houses converted into luxury apartments; a redundant water pumping station, a well pump house with ice house; a variety of mills, barns, oasts and outbuildings all saved from dereliction and transformed into homes and offices; restored and re-ordered churches, towers and spires; reclaimed and restored gardens and even dovecotes; together with new and contemporary homes, art galleries, museums and theatres.
The judging teams comprised a Sussex Heritage Trust Trustee, a professional in the appropriate field and a ‘lay person’ to ensure a balanced view. The criteria include the project’s suitability of purpose, the best use of the site, the quality of workmanship and suitability of materials used.

COME AND JOIN THE BRIGHTON & HOVE INTERFAITH CHOIR
The Brighton & Hove Interfaith Contact Group has established a small interfaith choir. They would welcome further Jewish members in general, and for the annual Interfaith Service in particular, which will be held this
year on 20 November at B&H Progressive Synagogue. The choir meets fortnightly and is lead at least every other rehearsal by one of our two professional singer/musicians, Razia Aziz (Sufi Muslim background) and
Judith Silver (Jewish). On other occasions rehearsals are lead by a choir member. Choir members contribute £40 per term (or £5 per session) but no one is excluded for reasons of cost. We are a friendly, inclusive group.

Oneg celebrating 250 years of Jewish Life in Brighton

‘Bernhard Baron’ Entrepreneur, philanthropist, socialist and liberal Jew’ Presented by the celebrated local historian Godfrey Gould
As part of the important celebrations of the 250th anniversary of Jewish life in Brighton we are pleased to welcome Godfrey Gould to our synagogue. Godfrey was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and educated at the Universities of Durham, London and Sussex. He came to Brighton 50 years ago and it was his studies at Sussex especially which stimulated his interest in local history. He has written widely including a History of the B&H Jewish Welfare Board and co-edited the recently published Anthology of 250 years of local Jewish history. He is Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and an Honorary Life Chartered Companion of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
Bernhard Baron (1850-1929) too had an exciting and successful life and his name still lives on philanthropic circles. He said in a speech opening a convalescent home in Brighton “There is only one happiness in life, and that is to protect others and to give to others.”
